Memory Box by OpenIris: knowledge that stays

Memory Box by OpenIris is an AI interviewer that holds regular conversations with experienced staff and records their knowledge as cards in a shared knowledge box, so knowledge stays when people leave. OpenIris, a Dutch company, builds it through Startup in Residence Intergov with a challenge team from the Municipality of The Hague, the Province of South Holland and the Netherlands Forensic Institute; the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security joined the assignment.

Memory Box with Startup in Residence Intergov

Why does knowledge need keeping?

Almost one in three Dutch municipal civil servants will reach retirement age in the next ten years (source: A&O fonds Gemeenten, Toekomstverkenning arbeidsmarkt gemeenten 2035). Most of what they know is not written down: who to ask, and what went wrong last time.

How does Memory Box work?

At set moments an experienced colleague has a short check-in with an AI interviewer that asks follow-up questions and records what is otherwise only in their head. Each insight becomes a card in a shared knowledge box that colleagues can consult. Memory Box has run in production since October 2026, and the first real conversations have been held.
